Job Compass is a job search app that revolutionizes how students/graduates find employment. It features a user-friendly interface that simplifies account creation, job application, and job filtering processes. The app's messaging system ensures seamless communication between employers and applicants, keeping users informed about application statuses and interview invitations.Users can also apply directly to job listings within the platform, leveraging stored profiles and resumes for efficient job hunting. This comprehensive tool aims to streamline the job search experience, empowering users to navigate their career paths effectively and with confidence.

I conducted a survey with 29 students and interviewed 3 students with the goal of understanding the quantitative and qualitative data behind the motivations, needs, and behaviors of potential users of the employment opportunities system.

Overall, LinkedIn and Indeed cater to different aspects of the job search process, with LinkedIn focusing more on professional networking and career development, while Indeed offers a comprehensive job search platform with a vast array of job listings.

LinkedIn is a professional networking platform where users manage profiles to highlight skills and experiences. It connects individuals with career opportunities, facilitates networking with colleagues and employers, and offers job search tools and industry insights for career development and staying informed.


Indeed

Indeed is a job search engine that aggregates job listings globally from various sources, including job boards and company career pages. It provides advanced search filters for refining job searches by location, salary, and job type, and allows users to upload resumes for increased visibility to employers. Additionally, Indeed offers company reviews to provide insights into workplace culture and employee experiences.

I created 3 user personas to understand the needs, frustrations, and goals of the job search process.After finalizing my low fidelity sketches, I created a prototype with the task flow of creating an account, searching and applying for a job, and reaching out to the employer to schedule an interview.

Testing

I completed a rough prototype and began task flow testing with a small group of users, uncovering several usability issues. Identifying these issues and implementing corrections ultimately resulted in the final iteration of the Job Compass model.

Conclusion

While Job Compass faces fierce competition from giants like LinkedIn and Indeed, our journey highlighted their shortcomings and areas for improvement. Addressing these gaps presents an opportunity to enhance the job search experience globally.Job Compass not only identifies existing limitations but also suggests ways competitors can evolve to better serve users. This experience underscored the importance of innovation and user-centered design in reshaping job search platforms.

I partnered with a local auto-detailing business, Beantown Detail, to develop a potential app that streamlines the booking process, allowing customers to easily choose dates, times, certified detailers, and packages while enhancing communication between customers and detailers.

Sign-In/up

The sign in / sign up page provides secure access to personalized features, simplifying account creation, booking, tracking, and communication. This enhances customer trust and ensures a seamless detailing experience.

Homepage

The homepage allows customers to view their upcoming appointments, popular detail packages, and featured detailers. It also has a bottom navigation system for easy access to other app features.


Packages

The app offers various detail packages, each with a rating, price range, detailed reviews, and a list of included services. Each package page also features a "Book Now" button that directs customers to the appointment booking page.


Booking

On the booking page, customers can choose from certified detailers available on selected dates and times, capable of completing the detailing package of choice. Once booked, a confirmation is sent via text or email.

Profile

The profile page allows customers to update their personal details, including contact information, location, and payment methods. They can also access their booking history to view past detail appointments.


Communication

The messaging page enables customers to directly message their detailer, preventing miscommunication before and after appointments. It also provides access to Beantown tech support for additional assistance.


What's next?

Beantown Detail and I will be collaborating closely this year as they expand their business. A functional version of the app is under construction and is expected to be in use by Summer 2025.
